I’ve been busier than ever and with that, (public) writing has taken an intentional backseat to some other more things related to growing Project Endure. This short blog is an off-the-cuff expansion of something that a recent podcast guest shared with me. I appreciate you taking the time to read and I hope it resonates….

Walking Home

In a deep conversation about death (memento mori) the guest shared that we are all walking each other home and that struck me; we’re all going to the same place and this life is a chance to walk home with our fellow humans. To me, death is something that we don’t talk enough about – it’s an inevitable end to all life and something that we must consider if we want to live well. The simple truth that our time is limited is what makes it precious and in a way, we are all dying men with no idea how long we have left. I think Steve Jobs said it well….

“Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Almost everything–all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure–these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart. No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet, death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it, and that is how it should be, because death is very likely the single best invention of life. It’s life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new.”

I’m sharing this because we have a lot to be grateful for if we look in the right places. This life is so much bigger than us and we all share more in common than we think. Let’s do a good job this week of walking home (well) with each other. If you have the bandwidth, extend a hand and help someone else get to where they’re going.

To close I’ll share a quick tribal word – ubuntu – it means I am because you are. In other words, we all exist together as a collective and our world wouldn’t be the same without all of the other humans we share it with. Let’s be kind and choose to live on purpose with purpose.
