This year has been amazing in so many ways and as you can tell from the (in)frequent blogs, it’s been packed to the brim with things other than writing. While productive, I’ve felt scattered and even distracted at times with different responsibilities and opportunities. Going into 2024 I wanted to find a phrase that would help me focus on what’s most important and that’s what this blog is about. Three simple words will define the coming year for me and Project Endure: move the dirt. See the quote at the end for context – for now, here’s what it means to me.

Move The Dirt

It's about doing the work even when it's uncomfortable.
It's about keeping commitments even when it's no longer convenient.
It's about persisting on our own path even when it's unpopular.
It's about doing what we said we would do even when we don't feel like it.
It's about trusting that hard work works when the work is consistent.
It's about stacking wins one at a time because little by little, little becomes a lot.
It's about giving our best effort in the short term while remembering it's a long game.
It's about embracing the process regardless of the outcome.
It's about seeing the work as the reward because of who it makes us.
It's about being relentless in pursuit of what matters most.
It's about not feeling the need to do the work alone.
It's about growing with others who are also moving the dirt.
It's about learning to have fun as we shovel.

It’s about pursuing intentional and incremental progress toward where want to go and who we want to become AND it’s so much easier said than done. Moving the dirt is an act of discipline and a practice of patience – in time, it’ll become a chosen art that defines everything else.

I hope that you wake up with a shovel in the morning but in the case of the spoon, just remember…

“Training (and life) is like moving a pile of dirt. Some days you use a shovel, some days you use a spoon but as long as you move some dirt, you’re headed in the right direction.”

  1. “Move the dirt” is a long-term mindset and philosophy that represents the everyday grind and consistent effort required to achieve a major goal. It is often used to signify pushing through challenging, monotonous, or grueling work—much like moving heavy soil by hand—with the understanding that consistent, small actions eventually lead to significant progress
