This weekend I decided lunge around a track for a mile with a 35 lb weighted vest and I hope that this short blog can make it make sense (for no other reason than it feels important to share as a human).

There’s something special that happens when we get to choose our own pain.

It’s almost as if a window opens up that allows us to both look within and beyond ourselves.

The pain tempers our pride and allows us a glance at how small we are.

The hurt helps us understand that we can find strength through our struggles.

The lowness found at the limits affords us the chance to learn about who we are and who we can be.

When the pain stops, the window shuts and as humans have a habit of doing…

We forget what it feels like and go one with our lives.

The pain is a privilege because it gives us a chance to reach into that window and pull into existence the pieces of us that can do more, give more and be more.

The same goes for pain that we didn’t choose but that’s for another time.

I’ll wrap things up with a quote that means a lot to me…

“To progress again, man must remake himself. And he cannot remake himself without suffering. For he is both the marble and the sculptor. In order to uncover his true visage he must shatter his own substance with heavy blows of his hammer.”

Alexis Carrel
