We’re one week out from the annual Project Endure event which will take place here in Philadelphia, PA. I’m nostalgic about las year’s event, excited for this year’s and very much in a place of reflection. I wanted to share a simple phrase that I can’t seem to shake as it pertains to this season of life and that’s what this blog is about.

Intentional Stumble

Three years ago I quit a job that felt stable to create something that felt formless. The truth is that I took a calculated risk to build Project Endure but didn’t have a clear, detailed vision of what it would become. Instead, like a man attempting to find his way in the dark by way of lantern-light, I was only ever able to see the very next step. More often than not, it felt like I was intentionally stumbling toward a distant destination that comes more into focus as I move forward.

This episode recaps some of the emotions and experiences that were had during our second annual event.

So here’s what I’d like to share.

I don’t think it’s possible to know what we want in 10 years (and for that reason, I dislike the question “where do you see yourself in ten years?”). We all change with each choice we make and using that truth, we are different people 10 years from now, let alone 10 months, weeks, days, minutes from now. I don’t think it’s wise to make having a clear vision one of the prerequisites for taking action. Like I often share with clients – ready is a decision, not a feeling and most of us won’t feel ready because life is so uncertain. In other words, if you want to pursue the dreams that you have in your mind, you need to be willing to intentionally stumble in the direction that you feel called to move even if you don’t feel ready because you can’t see multiple steps ahead.

Don’t let you dreams of today become bones in the graveyard of what could have been.

Pick up the lantern and start stumbling…

“Keep on going and the chances are you will stumble on something, perhaps when you are least expecting it. I never heard of anyone ever stumbling on something sitting down.”
