I wasn’t going to write another blog in 2021 but this topic is too relevant (and important) not to dive into. Through hundreds of hours of mindset coaching this year, the most common obstacle shared across dozens of clients was the fear of what other people thought of them. I share this because it’s something that we’ve all experienced, are experiencing or will experience as human beings living in this world where comparison is easier than ever.

This message is for anyone out there who cares too much about what the outside world thinks of them (most of us).

Here are my condensed thoughts on comparison and confidence as we head into a brand new year.

I’ve never had the confidence that I have right now and I tell you that because I’m just realizing now (at 27) that it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks as long as we’re at peace with who we are and who we’re becoming. True confidence comes from being clear about our being and living in congruence with that person in all circumstances (living from the inside-out). The great thing about confidence is that it can be cultivated (read about it here) but that doesn’t mean that it’s a walk in the park. Being authentic in a world that values instant attention means risking immediate gratification and superficial accolades for something far more valuable – our true identities.

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become Everything else is secondary.

Steve Jobs

Here’s the encouragement as we head into the new year – the people in your life who truly matter will love you for who you are and the other people don’t matter. Being authentic is the most effective way to find fulfillment, create impact and maximize potential. Stop living in fear of what other’s (might) think and take it from me – the beard and glasses in the picture below are a new look and if someone doesn’t like it… who care? I like it and that’s more than enough for me.

Don’t ever shrink down because the world doesn’t understand you. Don’t ever stop dancing because the world doesn’t hear your music. Don’t ever compromise who you are for who you think the world wants you to be.

To end this blog and end this year, let me leave you with an encouraging quote that has helped me a lot.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines! Sail away from safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover!”
