I haven’t been writing as much as I’d like on the blog because of how hectic things have been with work, travel and other adventures. I’m sitting here on a Sunday morning with a rare pocket of time and figured I’d starting writing and see what comes out – here we go!

Since starting Project Endure three years ago, I’ve learned a lot about business, people and life. More than anything else, entrepreneurship has taught me about what I’m good at, what I’m not good at (a lot), how I think, who I am and who I want to be. There are so many lessons that I’ve learned as I’ve built this thing that matters so much to me but in this moment, one lesson stands out to me more than the rest.

There are no rules.

In other words, there isn’t just one way to do anything and you’re allowed to think out of the box. Many of us grow up thinking that there are a limited number of predetermined paths to getting what (we think) we want. The truth is that there are no rules when it comes to creating our lives and that true fulfillment lives on the other side of ownership. I’m not encouraging anyone to break laws but I am suggesting that if no one answers the front door, go around back, look at the side and check the windows if you have to.

In addition to creative thinking, persistence is an important part of the “no rules” mindset. One of my favorite stories is about a remote tribe who had a rain dance with 100% success rate. When neighboring tribes asked them for the secret, the tribe leader responded with, “it’s simple, we just dance until it rains.”

Where there’s a will, there’s a way. If there’s something that you really want, you’re going to have to work for it and you might even have to break the “rules.” Don’t let what you “should be” doing stop you from what you “could be” creating and when all else fails just know that there’s another way forward.

“The one rule is, there are no rules.
