This month I had to honor of being featured on Channel 6 ABC News here in Philadelphia on their “Be Kind” segment (you can watch here). The opportunity came about because of something that I had been doing for the past year: getting coffee with strangers and in turn, making friends. I’ve written about similar topics before (be the reason someone smiles) but this blog is different. It’s a simple attempt to show you how being a good person makes you better at everything you do.

Be A Good Person

I’m a physical therapist by trade and one of the hardest things for me in the profession is watching clinicians become divided on the nuanced aspects of biomechanical care while losing sight of what matters most – being there for another human being. In other words, I would argue that being a good human being is the foundation for being a good healthcare professional and that has to come first. To go further, I would assert that being a good human would make anyone better at everything they did.

Being a good person is a prerequisite for being exceptional at anything else.

There are exceptions to everything and this concept is no different. Being a good human will not inherently and automatically make someone a more skilled mechanic. However, I would argue that by being a better human, people would feel more comfortable with said mechanic and in turn, this would result in a better overall client experience (and business growth). Soft skills have hard consequences.

The best part about all of this is that being a good human (in addition to making us better at what we do) makes the world a better place and is not that hard not hard at all. Being a good person is exactly what you think it is – it’s caring about people, respecting others and being there for those you love. It can look very different depending on the context but it doesn’t have to be complicated – flash a smile, hold a door, send a message, listen more, etc.. To me, being a good person also means matching our actions with our words and following through on commitments (doing what we said we would do).

If you’ve gotten to the end of the blog and still don’t know what you need to do to be a good human, just listen to your gut and do the next right thing even when it’s inconvenient. Strive to make the world a better place once interaction at a time and if you need a spark, let me leave you with this…

“We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity; more than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost.”
