The fence belongs to satan.

This is the thought that has been getting me out of bed.

Let me explain.

This past Tuesday, I woke up at 3:30 AM and convinced myself that it was a good idea to rest on the couch before going out for the daily mile (day 986 of a run streak comprised of a minimum one mile each day). What started as a few minutes turned into more and I could feel the comfort sucking me into a decision that I never intended to make. I ended up taking this picture (to be accountable) and doing what needed to be done (moving the dirt) and it’s all because of this story…

There was a man standing in a field starting at a fence that split it in two…

On one side was satan and the other, God.

The man wanted to BOTH indulge in temptation AND in the promises of God.

In an effort to avoid choosing one side of the fence, and losing the benefit of the other…

The man sat ON the fence.

Thinking he cheated the game and outsmarted both sides, he laughed.

Then the lights went off…

From the darkness, satan emerged.

In terror, the man gasped for breath and shouted… “no, no, no…. satan, I didn’t choose you.”

In that moment satan grabbed the man, pulled him hard and said…

“the fence belongs to me”.

You can’t have it both ways so be intentional and choose your hard.

“The most intelligent men, like the strongest, find their happiness where others would find only disaster: in the labyrinth, in being hard with themselves and with others, in effort; their delight is in self-mastery; in them asceticism becomes second nature, a necessity, an instinct. They regard a difficult task as a privilege; it is to them a recreation to play with burdens that would crush all others.”

Friedrich Nietzsche

Do hard things.
